Anal Fistula

Anal Fistula

Overview: An anal fistula is an abnormal connection between the rectal canal and the skin around the anus, usually developing due to an infection or abscess in the anal glands. It can cause pain, discharge, and recurrent infections.

Symptoms:

  • Persistent pain and discomfort in the anal area
  • Swelling or discharge around the anus
  • Fever and general discomfort if infection is present
  • Pain during bowel movements

Treatments:

Ayurvedic Treatments:

  • Kshara Sutra Therapy: This is the preferred Ayurvedic method for treating fistulas. A medicated thread is inserted through the fistula tract to gradually cut through and heal the tissue. It is a non-surgical and minimally invasive treatment that promotes healing without a high recurrence rate.
  • Herbal Remedies: Herbs like Guggul and Turmeric have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that help control infection and support healing.

Conventional Treatments:

  • Fistulotomy: This surgical procedure involves opening and cleaning the fistula tract to allow healing. It is often used when the fistula does not involve much of the anal sphincter.
  • Seton Placement: A surgical thread is placed through the fistula to gradually cut through the tract, preserving sphincter muscles.
  • LIFT Procedure (Ligation of Intersphincteric Fistula Tract): This technique involves closing the internal opening of the fistula, often preserving the anal sphincter muscles.
  • Fibrin Glue or Collagen Plug: Injecting fibrin glue or placing a collagen plug can seal the fistula tract, helping to heal it naturally.
