Piles (Hemorrhoids)

Piles-Hemorrhoids

Overview: Piles, also known as hemorrhoids, are swollen veins in the lower rectum and anus. They can cause discomfort, itching, and bleeding, especially during bowel movements. Piles are commonly classified as internal (within the rectum) or external (under the skin around the anus).

Symptoms:

  • Pain and discomfort in the anal region
  • Itching or irritation around the anus
  • Swelling near the anus
  • Bleeding during bowel movements

Treatments:

Ayurvedic Treatments:

  • Kshara Sutra Therapy: A specialized Ayurvedic treatment where a medicated thread is used to treat piles. This thread is carefully tied around the hemorrhoidal tissue, helping it shrink and eventually fall off.
  • Kshara Karma: An application of a herbal alkaline paste directly to the hemorrhoidal tissue to reduce swelling and provide relief from pain.
  • Agnikarma Chikitsa: This technique uses heat to cauterize the swollen tissue, offering relief from bleeding and pain.
  • Herbal Remedies: Ayurvedic herbs like Triphala, Guggul, and Aloe Vera are often prescribed for reducing inflammation, improving digestion, and promoting smooth bowel movements.

Conventional Treatments:

  • Lifestyle Modifications: Dietary changes to include high-fiber foods, increased water intake, and avoiding straining during bowel movements can help manage and prevent piles.
  • Medication: Over-the-counter creams, ointments, and suppositories containing hydrocortisone or witch hazel can reduce inflammation and soothe the area.
  • Minimally Invasive Procedures: Rubber band ligation, sclerotherapy, or infrared coagulation are non-surgical options used to shrink or remove piles.
  • Surgery: In severe cases, a hemorrhoidectomy or stapled hemorrhoidopexy may be necessary to remove the hemorrhoidal tissue.
